Bilingual PEER Program Student Intern

Job Description Overview:

The focus of the Peer Empowerment and Education Retention (PEER) Program is to build peer education and advocacy teams of CalWORKs students throughout California. Through grassroots organizing, political education, skills-building and leadership development, the Program works to empower low-income students with children to continue their educational paths despite welfare reform, and to organize for CalWORKs policies that support education and training and foster long-term self-sufficiency.

Qualifications and Requirements:

LIFETIME is currently recruiting PEER Student Interns to assist with our Peer Empowerment and Education Retention (PEER) Program. The Student Intern reports directly to the PEER Program Coordinator, and will work as a PEER advocate, workshop facilitator/presenter, and outreach worker to provide peer-based support and advocacy services to CalWORKs and other low-income students in danger of dropping out of school.

Candidate must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and must be able to work independently. Must be a strong team player. Must be bilingual; bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese or Mandarin is preferred. Experience with welfare systems are a plus. We are looking for talented and committed people with experience working with diverse, low-income communities. Women, low-income students with children, and/or people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Case Management to provide PEER advocacy and support to CalWORKs and other low-income parents pursuing education.
  • Organizing, facilitating, and presenting informational “Education Works!” workshops to help parents know their rights to education under welfare reform, and how they can become involved in organizing efforts on reauthorization.
  • Conducting surveys through outreach to CalWORKs parents to document discriminatory practices under state implementation of welfare reform.
  • Maintaining role as a member of the Parent Leadership Committee, which includes bimonthly conference calls.
  • Planning and implementing outreach to current and potential CalWORKs students on campus and in the community.
  • Tracking outreach efforts on a monthly basis.
  • Representing the organization at local, state and national events related to the campaign, including some out of town travel.
  • Serving as initial point of contact for low-income parents for the organization.
  • Attending weekly supervision meetings with LIFETIME staff.
  • Keeping accurate time sheets.
  • Complying with all organizational policies related to employment.

Salary: $10/hour, work study

Status: Internship, at least 1 year commitment preferred

Hours: 15-20 hours per week, with flexible hours available to fit students’ class schedules, and 32-40 hours per week may be available during summer and other school breaks.

Location: San Leandro office; however, work throughout the bay area may be required for outreach and workshops

Bilingual Regional Community Organizing Intern

Job Description Overview:

LIFETIME is currently recruiting Regional Community Organizing Interns to assist with our End Poverty, Not Welfare Campaign, to expand access to postsecondary education for low-income parents, particularly under the reauthorization of welfare reform and its state implementation. The Organizing Interns will be responsible for recruiting members and coordinating regional activities in the Central Valley, the Los Angeles Area, or the Bay Area. Organizing Interns report to the Lead Organizer, and will assist with the development and implementation of organizing strategies in support of the campaign as LIFETIME continues to expand statewide.

Qualifications and Requirements:

The candidate must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills and must be able to work independently and in a team. Experience with the welfare system is a plus. We are looking for talented and committed people with experience working with diverse, low-income communities. Must be bilingual; bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese or Mandarin is preferred. Must have a strong commitment to social and economic justice issues, and available nights and weekends, as needed.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Grassroots Member Recruitment of CalWORKs and other low-income students and parents through a variety of outreach tactics, such as door to door, on-site outreach, facilitation and participation in college workshops, and community meetings to identify and develop parent leaders to lead LIFETIME’s organizing and policy work.
  • Campaign Coordination, including, but not limited to: coordinated large grassroots actions; coordinating local campaign actions; representing LIFETIME in meetings with allies, policy makers and targets; identifying/building relationships with local groups and organizations; and implementing media strategies and tactical plans.
  • Regional Organizing Committee Development. Assist and coordinate membership leaders to form LIFETIME regional organizing committees throughout the Central Valley, Los Angeles Area, and Bay Area.

 Other responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and facilitate leadership trainings/workshops.
  • Track outreach efforts on a monthly basis and produce reports for Lead Organizer.
  • Assist with the development of reports to funders about the campaign’s progress.
  • Comply with all organizational policies related to employment.
  • Attend program, department, and staff meetings and/or weekly calls, including at least one (1) Quarterly in person meeting.
  • Additional duties, as assigned.

Salary: $10/hour, work study preferred

Status: Internship, at least 1 year commitment preferred

WEJ Project Coordinator / Organizer

Job Description Overview:

Since 1996, LIFETIME has worked to improve welfare policies and expand low-income parents’ access to postsecondary education and training opportunities and jobs at wages that support a family. Building on this important work LIFETIME has launched Women for Economic Justice (WEJ), an emerging national network of grassroots low-income women-led organizations working to raise public awareness of public policies and program strategies that will increase the economic well-being of low-income mothers and their children. The WEJ Project Coordinator/ Organizer will work directly with the Executive Director to coordinate efforts between these sister-groups to expand our work nationally.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinating schedules, conference calls, planning meetings, and travel arrangements with sister groups.
  • Maintaining documentation of planning process, membership requirements recruitment strategies, fundraising activities, and policy work.
  • Assisting with the grant and progress reports about the project’s accomplishments.
  • Insuring that the objectives of the WEJ project are being met by LIFETIME and our sister groups.
  • Maintain records and contacts in LIFETIME’s database on membership development and legislative efforts on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in institutional and grassroots fundraising efforts, including grant writing and special events.
  • Develop MOUs (Memorandums of Understanding) with sister groups
Minimum Qualification include:
  • Prior experience in organizing or a background in policy work is highly desirable
  • Strong organizational skills, as well as attention to detail required.
  • Experience with the welfare system is a plus

Salary: $15/hour

Status: Temporary position, at least 1 year commitment preferred

Executive Assistant

Job Description Overview:

The Executive Assistant will manage all aspects of the daily administrative operations and needs of the Executive Director including all scheduling, calendaring, and travel arrangements, as well as correspondence, filing, copying, mailing, reimbursement requests, and timesheet processing and any other “on demand” tasks requested. Responsibilities may include travel with the Executive Director, as well as ability to meet and work off-site with the director as needed.

We are looking for motivated, self-starting individuals to join the LIFETIME team! The ideal candidate must have excellent writing, communication and time management skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, the ability to multitask, excellent computer skills, a self-starter, and a committed work ethic.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting online and other research on poverty, welfare reform, and other economic justice issues as needed
  • Assist with writing and editing projects as needed, including experience preparing budgets.
  • Assist with coordination, scheduling, communication, and travel of a national network of grassroots economic justice organizations led by low-income women of color.
  • Assist the ED in all administrative aspects. (Voice mails, emails, maintaining calendar, meeting coordination and follow up, office organization, travel arrangements, and information management.)
  • Responsible for coordinating and managing communication, projects, and tasks between ED and their staff and contacts in a timely, efficient, and supportive role.
  • Perform any other administrative / organizational tasks for the Executive Director as needed.

Minimum Qualification include:

  1. Prior experience as an Executive Assistant is required
  2. Strong, clear, and accurate professional communication skills
  3. Pleasant, positive, and helpful attitude and strength in forming good working relationships
  4. Ability to take direction, be a team player, and also be a self starter in responsibilities
  5. Independent critical thinking and resourcefulness with daily tasks
  6. Confident in multi-tasking and prioritizing
  7. Problem solving agility
  8. Strong basic computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  9. Organized and detailed oriented
  10. Dependable car; Valid Driver’s License and current insurance

Salary: $15/hour (DOE), benefits after 90 day probationary period

Status: This is a part-time position about 20-30 hours per week with the potential for growth and opportunity for advancement.

Location: San Leandro office, may require travel up to 10% of the time
