Parent Leaders visit the Sacramento Capitol

The goal of the End Poverty, Not Welfare! Campaign is to shape public opinion and win policy changes that challenge institutionalized oppression of low-income families by the welfare system and to gain improved state and federal welfare policies under TANF reauthorization and its state implementation.

LIFETIME is engaging members of the Parent Leadership Committee in organizing and mobilizing low-income parents to participate in the campaign. The campaign has two focuses:

TANF Reauthorization

In 1997, Temporary Assistance for Need Families (TANF) replaced Aid to families with Dependent Children (AFDC), introducing new restrictions on a family's eligibility to receive welfare. By instituting a five year maximum term limit for parents which has created substantial hardships for many families.

Education Works!

This aspect of the campaign involves CalWORKs parents getting involved in community organizing, policy advocacy, leadership activities, and direct action to win improved policies that will expand parents' opportunities for higher education and training and living wage jobs.
