TANF Reauthorization

Melissa
Melissa Garcia, a TANF student at California State University Chico testifies about her experience under welfare reform at a recent town hall meeting on TANF reauthorization. The townhall was attended by Congressman Wally Herger, chair of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources, as well as over 200 of his constituents.

In response to TANF reauthorization, LIFETIME organized the Parent Leadership Committee on TANF Reauthorization, a statewide committee of 42 mothers and fathers who are pursuing or have completed college degrees while raising families on welfare.

Between June and August of 2001, committee members met to discuss and develop recommendations for TANF reauthorization that will help rather than hinder low-income populations. From this, the committee produced a position paper in order to influence the out come of TANF reauthorization.
